This sculpture comes with a long history. I encourage you take a moment and consider it. At first glance, I suppose this is just a typewriter with old paint on it. On deeper reflection, this sculpture contains much of my creative history over the last 30 years.

Also included:
This sculpture will also come with a framed print of the first painting created using this typewriter in 2008.

The Early Years.
This 1958 Royal Speed King typewriter has been with me since the early 90’s. In the early years, this typewriter was used to write short stories and poems and I would send them all over in hopes of becoming a published writer. I love writing. The only thing I received was rejection letters. (Rejection teaches your a lot about yourself.) I continued this for many years. In the early 2000’s, I started to focus more on my artwork but I continued plunking out stories and poems with this typewriter. In 2008, I started to look at ways that I could bring my love of writing together with my love of painting. So, I began a series of work in which I would run my drawings and paintings through this typewriter and type directly on to the drawing or painting. Just like with my art, I never planned what I wrote but I always tried to write from the heart. The beauty of an old typewriter is found in it’s permanence. Once you hit those keys, your ideas are engraved into the paper. You have to commit to your words. (Modern writers will never understand this feeling.) From 2008-2023, I created over 400 pieces of art with this typewriter. Every single one of those pieces are now found in art collections scattered around the world.

Then in 2023, it happened.
Early 2023 something broke with the carriage return and the typewriter no longer worked properly. I put it aside and with the intention of getting it fixed and it sat on on a small table in my studio waiting for something to happen. I went on painting as usual and the typewriter kept calling out to me. I loved the idea of continuing to integrate it with my painting. However, I wanted to do it in a new way. Somehow, where the typewriter itself became the object of the art piece, not the words it produced. I wanted the typewriter to be the center of attention. After all it gave me over the years, it deserved it. It deserved to the star of the show.

The Idea.
One evening in 2023, I was cleaning the dried paint off my palette and instead of throwing the old dried up paint out, I put it into the area in front of the carriage on the type bars. That was it. The idea! Instead of producing words, the typewriter would hold the history of all the paintings I would complete. So, for the last three years, I have been putting all the left over, dried up palette paint from every painting I completed between 2023-2026, onto this typewriter. I just kept adding and adding and over the last three years it has piled up as you see here. Instead of producing words, this typewriter now has something else to say.

The Future.
Here we are. It has finally come to an end. While this piece holds a very sentimental place in my heart and contains much of my creative journey thus far, it is time to let this go. While I need to let this go for my own creative process, I think the next part of this story begins with someone else becoming it’s caretaker. Maybe that person is you. Maybe the rest of the story begins with you.
